- "They must go to Beauxbatons. You know... Beauxbatons Academy of Magic... I read about it in An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe."
- — Hermione Granger identifying Beauxbatons students at the 1994 Quidditch World Cup[src]
An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe was a book about wizarding schools in Europe. It contained information about the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and the Durmstrang Institute.[1] It most likely discussed Hogwarts as well, giving the school's fame and prestige in the magical world.
History[]
- Harry Potter: "Durmstrang's another wizarding school?"
- Hermione Granger: "Yes, and it's got a horrible reputation. According to An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe, it puts alot of emphasis on the Dark Arts."
- — Hermione Granger regarding Durmstrang[src]
Prior to 1994, Hermione Granger had read it and learned of the Durmstrang Institute's horrible reputation and of their emphasis on the Dark Arts.[2] During the 1994 Quidditch World Cup riot, she mentioned having reading about Beauxbatons in the book when she, Harry and Ron were approached by a Beauxbatons girl who spoke French.[1]
In 1997, Hermione considered this book as she was sorting supplies for their mission to find Voldemort's Horcruxes. It is not specified if it was one of the books she decided to bring with them.[3] It is, however, unlikely; as it held no real use for Hermione, Harry and Ron on their mission which was set by Dumbledore.
