An allergy is something which triggers an allergic reaction. This is the immune system defending the body against attack by bacteria and viruses. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid.
On 14 February, 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart hired some dwarves to sing Valentines around Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, dressed as cupids. One of them was allergic to feathers and his fake wings made him itch.[1]
Human beings could be allergic to a variety of foods, including various types of nuts, wheat, milk, eggs, and/or soy.[2]
Behind the scenes
According to J. K. Rowling, Rubeus Hagrid was allergic to cats. This was hinted in the first book, when Hagrid told Harry Potter that cats made him sneeze.
