- "Naturally, naturally. But in essence divided?"
- — Dumbledore thinking aloud while observing the smoke from one of the devices.[src]
Albus Dumbledore kept a variety of silver instruments in his office at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They made constant whirring noises and occasionally emitted puffs of smoke. These instruments include a rotating tower and magnification devices. In December of 1995, by making careful observations of the snake-shaped smoke emitted from one of the devices, Dumbledore gained greater insight regarding Nagini's nature as a Horcrux, as well as Harry Potter's mental connection to Voldemort.[1]
In June of 1996, Harry broke many of these objects in a fit of rage after the death of his godfather Sirius Black. Dumbledore made no effort to stop him, remarking simply that he had too many possessions anyway.[2] They appeared to have been repaired or replaced sometime before September of that same year.[3]
Behind the scenes
- It can also be noticed that one of these instruments was a 3-D replica of the Deathly Hallows. It had a gold pyramid (the cloak), and inside a hollow sphere (the stone), which was kept in place by a large vertical rod (the Elder wand).
- In the video game adaption of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it appears that some of these instruments were placed in the top of the Astronomy tower.
