An aeroplane was a large Muggle aircraft with wings which is propelled forward by thrust from a jet engine or propeller. It is used by Muggles to transport people and cargo through the air to long-distance, or otherwise inaccessible locations.
History
Students playing Quidditch at Mahoutokoro School of Magic on the Japanese island of Minami Iwo Jima had to take care to avoid planes from the Japan Self-Defense Force airbase on the nearby island of Iwo Jima.[1]
On his eleventh birthday in 1991, Dudley Dursley was given a remote control version of one of these as a present[2], which he soon crashed.[3]
In the evening of 1 September, 1992, Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley passed by an aeroplane while flying an enchanted Ford Anglia to Hogwarts Castle, in Scotland.[4]
It is Arthur Weasley's dearest ambition to find out how aeroplanes fly and stay up.[5]
On 8 June, 2014, the USA defeated Liechtenstein on the quarter-finals of the 427th Quidditch World Cup. The Americans profusely celebrated this triumph, given the historical poor performance in international Quidditch (the game of Quodpot is the most popular in the US). They sent massive ammounts of red, white and blue sparks to the air, so that a harried ICWQC official commented to the Daily Prophet: "Look, we've had to perform mass Memory Charms on about 2000 Muggles living on the edge of the desert after the American celebrations last night, and don't get me started on the planes."[6]
