Harry Potter is caught by Argus Filch "befouling the castle" — leaving muddy footprints on the Castle's floors — but is rescued from punishment by Nearly-Headless Nick, who persuades Peeves to crash a valuable Vanishing Cabinet on the classroom above Filch's office, as a distraction. Nick invites Harry, Ron and Hermione to his five-hundredth Deathday Party, which took place a week later, on 31 October.
