1992–1993 school year

This article lists the general events of the 1992–1993 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as witnessed by the majority of students and staff. For an overview of events witnessed by Harry Potter and those close to him, please see this article.

The Slytherin Quidditch team gets seven Nimbus 2001 broomsticks as a gift from Lucius Malfoy (because his son, Draco, is the new Seeker)
Professor Gilderoy Lockhart founds the Dueling Club.
Argus Filch's cat Mrs. Norris is petrified, and graffiti on wall declares that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened.
Throughout the year more victims of the Slytherin's Basilisk are petrified:
Harry Potter is suspected to be the heir of Slytherin after speaking Parseltongue.
All victims are revived with a draught prepared from Mandrake roots near the end of term.
Close to the end of the school year, Headmaster Albus Dumbledore gets suspended by order of the school governors, but is given back the post after the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets is solved.
As a school treat, Professor Dumbledore cancels all exams.

Gilderoy Lockhart is appointed as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Although an author of numerous books about his supposed exploits, his qualifications are soon questioned by students and staff, alike. It is reported that he only got the job because he was the only one to apply to Dumbledore.

The Quidditch Cup was not awarded this year due to the attacks on Muggle-borns (the final match was cancelled).

1. Gryffindor:
Although it is clear that Gryffindor wins the House cup, the actual points of the Houses are unknown.
