  9. 9.0 9.1 9.2 We know that Professor Dippet has to have died in office as Headmaster, since according to J.K. Rowling at the Edinburgh Book Festival (J.K. Rowling at the Edinburgh Book Festival (15 August, 2004) source) that's the only way he'd get his portrait hung in the headmaster's office. Voldemort's timeline laid out in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince implies that Dumbledore suceeded Dippet in around 1957 (Riddle congratulates him on it when asking for the DADA job — this was ten years after killing Hepzibah Smith, which was itself just a short period after he left Hogwarts in 1945); from this follows that Dippet died then. As well as this, while in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix we learn that McGonagall joined the faculty in December 1956, Pottermore clarifies that she was offered "a job in the Transfiguration department, under Head of Department, Albus Dumbledore", implying that he was not yet Headmaster at that time and that Dippet was still alive.

  13. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 18, "Attractive blonde Rita Skeeter, 43, whose savage quill has punctured many inflated reputations..."; Goblet of Fire takes place in 1994, which makes Rita's birth year 1951, unless, of course, she is lying about her age.
